The information density of the DVD format was limited by the wavelength of the laser diodes used. Following protracted development, blue laser diodes operating at 405 nanometers became available on a production basis, allowing for development of a denser storage format that could hold higher-definition media, with prototype discs made with diodes at a slightly longer wavelength of 407 nanometers in October 1998. [14] [15] Sony commenced two projects in collaboration with Panasonic, Philips, and TDK, [16] applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical), [17] and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer), [18] a format of rewritable discs that would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE). The core technologies of the formats are similar. The first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled by Sony at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000. [19] A trademark for the "Blue Disc" logo was filed on February 9, 2001. [20] On February 19, 2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray Disc, [21] [22] and Blu-ray Disc Founders was founded by the nine initial members.Modern compact discs support a writing speed of 52× and higher, with some modern DVDs supporting speeds of up to 24×. [4] It is important to note that the speed of writing a DVD at 1× ( 1 385 000bytes per second) [5] is approximately 9 times as fast as writing a CD at 1× ( 153 600bytes per second). [6] However, the actual speeds depend on the type of data being written to the disc. [6] The write speeds aren’t the fastest, but it supports both M-Disc and BDXL discs and is cheaper than many drives with this technology. M-Discs are an archival media format (this drive comes bundled with a Verbatim M-Disc), and BDXL discs are high-capacity Blu-ray formats that hold several times the data of standard Blu-rays. So no, buying media that supports a higher write speed presents no direct benefit if you can live with simply the write taking longer. But since Blu-ray (just like CDs and DVDs) is a WORM (Write Once, Read Many) type media, write speeds should not be much of a concern unless you are writing a large number of disks. The media can be used for the same purposes, regardless of its maximum rated write speed; like with CDs and DVDs, the read speed is limited primarily by the device used for reading the disks, and secondarily by the quality of the recording (which is impacted by things like the specific dye composition, recording speed used, media deterioration, and more).
